history

Previous construction

There was a Romanesque chapel in Orsbach since the Middle Ages. This consisted of quarry stone and had a slate roof and a tower, which was considered to be dilapidated very early on. According to the church records, the church interior was about 12 by 7 meters, the choir about 7 by 5 meters. Since the oldest bell still preserved is dated to 1250, it can be assumed that the origin of the chapel lies in this period. The chapel is first named as a church in the Schleiden fiefdom's main family register from 1320 . In 1433 the chapel, which was consecrated to St. Peter and Paul, received a second bell, the Peter bell.

In the years 1804 to 1806, the community became an independent parish within the newly founded diocese of Aachen . In 1840 the chapel was elevated to a parish church. Since the building was meanwhile very dilapidated, the quarry stone chapel was demolished in 1863 and replaced by a new brick hall church right next to the old location.

Parish church

The foundation stone for the new church was laid on April 14, 1863. Just one year later, on June 25, 1864, St. Peter's Church was consecrated. The three-aisled, neo-Gothic building was designed by the master builder Vincenz Statz from Cologne . The 37 meter high tower, which was only added in 1874, and the two stair turrets were also designed by Statz.

In the early 1950s, the church received new wooden altars, a sermon chair and communion bench made of black marble. In 1968 new windows were installed in the nave. They were designed by the artist Theo Heimann. From 1989 to 1992 the original paintings in the interior, which had been covered over in the meantime, were restored and restored.

Church treasure

Bishop Marc-Antoine Berdolet gave the church a late Gothic tower monstrance from 1516. It comes from the Antoniterkloster in Cologne.
