The Church of St. Petri Büßleben , Am Peterbach 15, is a Protestant village church in the Erfurt district of Büßleben . It is a listed building .

Buildings and history

The history of the church goes back to the late Middle Ages . The mighty tower that has been preserved in the east of the church dates from this period .

The church building is an octagonal central building from 1774. The church has a mighty mansard hipped roof with rusticated corner blocks . In the west there is a portal with a tympanum-like top. The mighty tower in the east of the church is a remnant of the late medieval predecessor building. Uniform late baroque furnishings have been preserved in the interior. These include a two-storey gallery and a pulpit altar from around 1770 with high pillars and elaborate rocailles decorations .

In the summer of 2010, the church was included in the “Cultural Preservation in East Germany” program of the ZEIT Foundation Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius in order to renew the roof and protect the building with its valuable fittings against water damage.

Since 2016, the church has been the venue for the "Summer Concerts in Erfurt Village Churches" project run by the Erfurt Chamber Music Association .

organ

The organ by the organ builder Georg Christoph Stertzing with its richly decorated prospect is one of the most valuable pieces of equipment in the church . The instrument, built in 1702, is the oldest originally preserved organ in the city of Erfurt and was originally built for the Benedictine monastery St. Petri on Erfurt's Petersberg . It has been in the Büßleben church since 1811. The community of Büßleben bought the organ, which, like other inventory items in the monastery, was requisitioned by the Napoleonic occupying forces for 900 thalers . In the Erfurt area, the Stertzing organ is the only surviving organ from around 1700 and in all of Thuringia it is even the oldest in its size. The association Förderkreis Stertzingorgel in Büßleben takes care of the preservation and the church music life in the district. As a result, the organ by Alexander Schuke Potsdam Orgelbau could be restored in the years 1998 and 2002 to 2005 . The organ has 28 stops on two manuals and a pedal . The disposition is:

Churchyard

In the churchyard of St. Petri is the grave of the former parish priest Roland Weisselberg (1933-2006), who burned himself on Reformation Day 2006 at the Augustinian monastery in Erfurt in protest against what he believed to be threatened Islamization and the unclear attitude of the church to it.
