St. Petri Bachelors Rifle Brotherhood

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The St. Petri bachelor rifle brotherhood 1450 Büderich e. V. was founded in 1450 in Büderich (Wesel) . Members of the brotherhood are only unmarried men ( bachelors ), which is made clear by the club name. With around 100 members, most of whom are between 16 and 30 years old, the brotherhood celebrates its traditional shooting festival every three years . This will be the case for the next time in 2019.

Preface

From the founding of the brotherhood to 1742 there are no more records. The only evidence for the existence of the brotherhood at this time is a report in a chronicle from 1804. In that year the statutes were amended under Pastor Rechtmann and the statutes from 1450 were used. This is clear evidence that the brotherhood existed in 1450, so this date can be regarded as the year of foundation. The founding year may even be much earlier, but this cannot be proven. In 1742 the brotherhood was re-established. From this point onwards, the books of the secretary as well as the silver plaques of old kings and flags are available almost completely until today.

All events from the years 1742 to 1927 were transcribed in 1928 by the rifle brother Johannes Kerkmann in a bound leather book. It is thanks to this enormous amount of work that the history of the brotherhood from this period is also available for posterity and cannot be forgotten. Unfortunately, these records are in the script " Sütterlin ", an old German script that very few people can read today. At the present time there is no copy in the standard German language, so that no information can be given about the development and events of the brotherhood from the years 1742 to 1927. It should be noted at this point that no records were made in the period from 1914 to 1924. This can certainly be explained with the outbreak of the First World War , in which many Sagittarius brothers were killed. Under the difficult circumstances, it was not until 1924 that a few bachelors came together again, who gradually helped the shooting club to flourish again.

etymology

The name of the Schützenbruderschaft derives from the patron saint of the fisherman and later apostle Simon Peter .
This is why the hunter's greeting Petri comes safely , which is always countered with Petri thanks .

history

1924 to 1945

In the years 1928 to 1933 the brotherhood developed again into a large and important association in Büderich. However, when the National Socialists came to power in 1933, club life was dealt a considerable blow. After the rulers had banned public appearances, the club members decided to stop the club's activities and they only met in small private groups.

After the capitulation of the Hitler regime in 1945 and the beginning of the reconstruction, the brotherhood was quickly brought back to life. Already on the Corpus Christi procession in 1945, the prayer leaders and lamp carriers were provided by rifle brothers and the flags followed the Holy of Holies.

1945 to 1954

On August 27, 1945 the first meeting of some bachelors took place. On this day the decision was made to use all their might to rid the church of rubble and ashes and to push ahead with the reconstruction . It was also decided to hold an evening of faith every 14 days. Until the first ordinary general assembly, the board of directors consisted of the following members: President: Jakob Bruns, Vice-President: Johannes Hoffacker, Secretary: Josef Bruns, Rendant: Franz Schott, 1st brother master: Paul Gardemann, 2nd brother master: Heinrich Tembörg, assessor: Theodor Abels, Josef Uphoff, Karl van Husen, Bernhard Hoffacker and Johannes Abels, who has not yet returned from captivity. Other important dates from this time are January 13, 1946, the day of the first general meeting after the club's activities have ceased, Easter Sunday, April 21, 1946, on which the old tradition of burning a tar barrel at the watch on the Rhine was resumed and June 15, 1947, on which President Jakob Bruns announced the date of the next shooting festival.

On July 13, 1947, the time had finally come again, the first shooting festival after a long wait was celebrated. After a holy mass in the church, the procession and guests of honor moved to the festival meadow. With a crossbow , because shooting with a rifle had been banned by the military administration, the shooting of honor and prizes began immediately. This was followed by the royal shooting, in the course of which the rifle brother Herrmann Wäckers was able to get the rest of the bird off the rack. He made Susanne Uphoff queen. After a big parade, the coronation ball was celebrated in the Saale van Gelder, because at that time there was no money available for a marquee.

Just one year later, on September 8th and 9th, 1948, another shooting festival took place, this time for two days. On the second day, Engelbert Gardemann was named the shooter king and Gisela Külkens the shooter queen. As in the previous year, the Schützenball took place in the Saale van Gelder. At this shooting festival, the sparrow procession also celebrated for the first time.

In the period from July 15 to 18, 1950, the fraternity's jubilee shooting festival was celebrated in conjunction with the national festival of the historical shooting brotherhoods. When the federal festival was held, almost 1,500 riflemen, 78 flags and 11 marching bands marched through the decorated village on Sunday. Heinrich Holtappels managed to land the decisive goal on Tuesday. He chose Hildegard van Gelder as co-regent.

From now on, the brotherhood's rifle festivals followed every three years.

1950 until today

A special date for the brotherhood is January 9, 1954. Up until this point in time, the rifle brother Jakob Bruns has been president of the brotherhood for 25 years. It is thanks to him that the brotherhood continued to exist even in the turmoil of the Second World War . For this reason, on August 19, 1956, he was made an honorary member of the bachelors.

In 1964, the rifle brother Hans-Georg van Husen took over the office of President from his predecessor Jakob Bruns, so that after 35 years the brotherhood has passed into other hands.

From July 20 to 23, 1974, the jubilee shooting festival for the 525th anniversary of the shooting club took place. On this occasion, the usual course of a shooting festival was changed. Already on Saturday the riflemen went to the memorial to lay a wreath. Then on Sunday there was a big morning pint. The festive day was rounded off with a parade with the participation of numerous friendly shooting clubs. The sparrow procession on Monday morning was also a must. On Tuesday, rifle brother Hermann-Josef Gossens managed to get the bird off the rack. He appointed Maria Hackstein to the marksman queen. The big coronation ball followed by fireworks only ended when the sun was already rising again.

The 550th anniversary of the brotherhood was celebrated from 14 to 17 July 2001 with an anniversary shooting festival. Here Sven Mevissen was able to assert himself as the new shooter king who named Barbara Stevens his shooter queen.

Current

Today, numerous bachelor activities take place to shorten the long wait for the next shooting festival.
