The St. Pius Church is a Catholic church dedicated to Pope Pius X in Kandel (Palatinate) ( Diocese of Speyer ).

history

For centuries, Kandel had only one church, St. George's Church , which had been used as a Simultaneum since 1684 , the choir from the Catholic, the nave by the Protestant congregation. The key authority for the church was exercised by the Protestant community. For this reason in particular, there were repeated differences between the denominations.

After the end of the Second World War, the number of Catholics in the Protestant Kandel rose due to the influx of displaced persons and refugees, and the Simultaneum reached its limits. To remedy this, the construction of a Catholic church building was started under the aegis of Pastor Josef Ohmer. The foundation stone was laid on November 17, 1957, the consecration by the Speyer Bishop Isidor Markus Emanuel on October 19, 1958. The architect was Eugen Beuerlein from the Speyer Bishop's Building Office.

The last renovation of the church so far took place in 2009.

Until the 2000s, the church was the parish church of the parish of St. Pius Kandel. As part of a bistro reform, the parish of St. Pius was merged with several parishes in surrounding places to form the large parish of St. Fourteen Helpers in Need, based in Kandel.

description

The church building and the bell tower ( campanile ) are separate from each other. A sacristy is attached to the side of the nave .

The church interior has a square floor plan. With the exception of a few candlesticks and the Stations of the Cross, the high side walls are almost unadorned and have high, smaller square windows in the style of medieval Cistercian monasteries. The choir room with altar and tabernacle is characterized by a larger than life copper-blown relief of Pius X, the patron of the church, attached to the choir wall. It was created by the Munich artist Werner Schreiner .

There is a war memorial chapel next to the entrance .
