The listed Roman Catholic branch church Sankt Sebastian is located in the Schönreuth district of Kemnath .

history

This branch church was originally the palace chapel of Schloss Unterschönreuth . It was possibly built at the end of the 15th century by a member of the Bärnklau family on the outskirts, but perhaps it was built as Laurentius or Aegidius chapel as early as the 14th century; the Ägidius- patronage is still called 1665 and then probably in the time of the Counter-Reformation to the Holy. Sebastian passed over. In a Kemnath parish description from 1860, the plague year 1477 is mentioned as the foundation date. A foundation letter from the ancient Bärnklau family , mentioned by Joseph von Cammerloher in 1804 , also refers to this year of foundation . A chaplain had to celebrate the early mass donated by the Bärnklau every Wednesday . In 1740 it was decided in a process that although the mass was to be held, the owner of the Hofmark was also no longer bound to pay the 6 fl 30 kr early interest rate that had previously been paid for it . In the floor of the chapel there is a gravestone of a Frau von Schirnding on which the year MCCCCLXXXIIII (1484) can be read. Joseph von Cammerloher also reports that at the time of Calvinism, “the Catholic parish in Erbendorf emigrated here with its pastor and performed its parish and religious services there”. Schönreuth would be the only place in this area that remained Catholic during the Reformation.

The chapel has had an eventful fate: In the course of the Reformation , it was also burned down by the troops of Colonel von Seckendorff when Schönreuth was cremated . In 1694 another fire destroyed the rebuilt chapel and the whole town of Oberschönreuth. After the secularization decree of the minister Maximilian von Montgelas of 1802 the chapel should be completely demolished. In addition, on Portiunkulatag , August 2, 1819, Schönreuth was set on fire again by a lightning strike, with the upper castle, at that time only an economic building, the chapel and several houses being cremated. The image of St. Sebastian and the altar were saved from the burning chapel.

In 1842, the reconstruction work began using the older wall structure. 1844 Holy image could be brought into the chapel again, then from the Kemnather parish Haller benediziert was.
