Eslarn cemetery and memorial chapel

The Roman Catholic St. Sebastian cemetery chapel in the Upper Palatinate market Eslarn is located at Friedhofstrasse 4 and 6.

history

The first cemetery chapel was built in Eslarn in 1612. From the beginning she had Saint Sebastian as her patron . The visitation protocol from 1656 states that the “funeral sermon” is performed here. In 1695 the chapel, which was destroyed by fire, was demolished and rebuilt from scratch. In the description of the parishes in 1723/24 by Auxiliary Bishop Gottfried Langwerth von Simmern , the church is also referred to as the Chapel of St. Sebastian. In the parish description from 1860 it is said that the chapel is " Ex voto ", i. H. based on a vow, which cannot be true. The Eslar citizen Andreas Bauriedl donated 600 guilders to expand the chapel in 1775, but the magistrate refused to have the construction carried out even though the building materials had already been procured. On October 18, 1818, this church and many other houses in the village were destroyed by fire. Only four bare walls remained of the chapel. In 1824 work began on rebuilding the church. On November 23, 1824, Pastor Joseph Maximilian Vogl reported to the episcopal ordinariate that St. Sebastian's Church was nearing completion. The purchased altar came "from a church in Amberg". In the next major fire in 1895, the church was largely spared. After the First World War, the old cemetery at the “Hofweiher” was abandoned and on November 7, 1920, a new cemetery was inaugurated by Pastor Georg Bayer . The old cemetery chapel was also torn down and the new "cemetery and memorial chapel" was inaugurated on September 17, 1922. The plan comes from the Regensburg architect Heinrich Hauberrisser . The old altar was taken over, but a new way of the cross was designed by the painter Haller , who later came to the parish church. The chapel is owned by the Catholic Church Foundation.

The church has been made available to the Evangelical Lutheran congregation for church services since the Second World War because of the influx of numerous expellees at the time. In 1945, an Evangelical Lutheran vicariate was created for Eslarn, which was dissolved again in 1970.
