St. Sebastianus Rifle Brotherhood Geseke 1412

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The St. Sebastianus Schützenbruderschaft Geseke 1412 e. V., with over two thousand members and first mentioned in 1412, is one of the oldest and largest German rifle brotherhoods . It was founded in honor of Saints Fabian and Sebastian . The exact date of founding is unknown, as founding documents were unusual for such rifle brotherhoods at that time.

There is no historical evidence that the shooter Alhard Brand shot a piece of roast in front of his mouth during the siege of Geseke in the Thirty Years' War in April 1622 by Duke Christian von Braunschweig , known as "Toller Christian". What is certain, however, is that the rifle brotherhood supported the imperial colonel Dietrich Ottmar von Erwitte significantly in defending the city of Geseke against the great Christian during this siege.

The first rifle festival after the end of World War II was celebrated in 1947 under the supervision of the British occupying forces and the associated restrictions. Since firearms were forbidden, the bird was thrown from railroad ballast with stones. After no shooting festival could take place in the following year, crossbows were allowed to be used to shoot the bird on the sports area “Am Rabenfittich” in 1949.

The most striking feature of the Geseker riflemen is that instead of the widespread green rifle uniform they wear a tailcoat with a rose on their lapels and a cylinder with real oak leaves. In the hall, as the people of Sebastian call their own area, the Schützenplatz, the headgear of the Petzel, a kind of beret in dark green color, is worn; only the spiritual procurator of the brotherhood, the Archbishop of Munich and Freising from Geseke and former chairman of the German Bishops' Conference , Reinhard Cardinal Marx , wears a petzel in the same scarlet red as his biretta .

In addition to the voluntary work in the maintenance of local traditions and customs in the city of Geseke, the Sebastianers maintain the tradition of old home dances. Ecossaise , bowling and tampete are ballroom and step dances that originally came from aristocratic circles.

Another special feature of the brotherhood's rifle festival is the so-called "wobbly move", which is otherwise only found in a similar form at the Neuss citizens' rifle festival . Here the shooters pick up the new queen late on Saturday afternoon.

From June 30th to July 9th 2012 the brotherhood celebrated its 600th anniversary shooting festival. From 13 to 16 September 2013, the association hosted the federal festival .
