The Roman Catholic Church of St. Stephan is the former cemetery church of the old southern cemetery in Munich . The church is located at the northern end of the Südfriedhof, directly parallel to Stephanstraße, not far from Sendlinger-Tor-Platz . It is a branch church of the mother parish of St. Peter . The patronage is on December 26th.

architecture

St. Stephan is an east-facing early baroque church building that was built by Georg Zwerger from 1674 to 1677. The wooden Salvatorkirchlein, which had been there since 1576, was demolished in 1638 in order not to give the advancing Swedes an opportunity to entrench themselves. Zwerger also created the two churches in Markt Schwaben and Anzing, not far from Munich . The small onion dome, placed on top of the roof, houses two small bronze bells, which were rung by a cable until the beginning of January 2019 , and which are also used to strike the clock.

The apse still has the original stucco on the ceiling, whereas the former stucco of the rest of the vault was reconstructed by painting during the renovation from 2004 to 2006.

St. Stephan is equipped with a total of three altars, the high altar picture showing the martyrdom of the church patron St. Stephan . The altar leaves are still original and were not, as is often the case in other churches, replaced with altar leaves from the Nazarene school .

Other works of art inside the church include a complete Way of the Cross , painted in oil in a contemporary style, and a larger than life, wood-carved St. Joseph figure. A wrought iron grille separates the nave from the entrance area.

Between 2004 and 2006, St. Stephan was extensively renovated.
