The village church of St. Stephan in Waldau was named as the parish of Gernrode in 964 . It is a flat-roofed field stone building with a retracted rectangular choir and apse , which shows the characteristic staggering of the components apse, choir, nave and tower of a Romanesque village church. The lower parts of the west tower with walled-in simple arched windows are older than the upper storey with the coupled sound openings . This floor was built at the same time as the ship and the eastern sections were built. The sound openings are divided by columns with cube capitals and Attic bases.

The arched windows in the nave were renewed during the restoration. The village church has no west entrance. On the south side there is a stepped portal with an empty arched field, the fluted columns of which stand on high plinths and show capitals decorated with palmettes . The basement of the tower is closed with a barrel vault. It is connected to the nave via a wicket door , the soffits of which show early Romanesque incised drawings of shaft crosses .

The round-arched triumphal arch to the choir is supported by profiled fighters . There is a warrior cornice in the apse.

Extensive restorations were carried out around 1930 and after 1988. The church was freed from later modifications, the original beamed ceiling was exposed and the church was protected against rising damp.

Furnishing

Nothing has been preserved from the original furnishings. The current equipment is simple and modern. Wrought-iron candlesticks are used as lighting, including a wheel chandelier , a seven-armed chandelier and other individual chandeliers . A Romanesque font with an octagonal cup and a renewed shaft is also part of the equipment. A bronze bell from 1892, which was cast by the Ulrich brothers in Laucha, serves as the bell.
