The Filialkirche St. Stephan is the Catholic village church of Welden , a district of the municipality of Fuchstal in the Upper Bavarian district of Landsberg am Lech . It is consecrated to St. Stephen .

description

The church, which is strikingly located on the slope, is in the center of the small village of Welden. The compact tower with arched friezes is Gothic, a nave built in 1552 was demolished in the 18th century in order to build a new choir and nave. The crenellated tower shaft points to a Kaufbeurer origin of the building at that time.

Choir with altar and ceiling fresco

The current building dates from 1784 and was carried out by the Füssen master builder Benedikt Nigg . The lay chairs and the ceiling frescoes by the Kaufbeur painter Alois Gaibler , on which, among other things, a contemporary view of the village of Welden can be seen, have been preserved from the baroque furnishings .

Welden had its own parish early on with the oldest church in the area, but the parish became part of the Leeder parish as early as 1605 , to which it still belongs today as a subsidiary church. The division from the Kaufbeuren chapter took place in 1662. However, the Welderer wanted their own pastor in 1739.

The choir was refurbished in the 19th century, and from 1979 the church was completely renovated again.
