history

The abbot of the Wessobrunn monastery , Bernhard Gering, built the St. Stephanus chapel in the early baroque style on the foundation walls in 1664 , a monk's hermitage from the twelfth century that fell victim to the fire . There, a hermit fed travelers on the old Roman road. During the period of secularization , the Wessobrunn monastery was expropriated from its land. The Counts of Hohenpähl became the new owners of the chapel . Today it is privately owned by the residents of Stillern .

At the end of the Second World War, American soldiers found refuge in St. Stephen and used the tower of the chapel as a spy base for the Allies.
