St. Wenceslaus (Jauernick)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The St. Wenzeslaus Church in Jauernick is the oldest church in the Görlitz diocese and has been a collegiate church since the beginning of 2010. The patron saint of the church is St. Wenceslas of Bohemia .

architecture

The church, a plastered quarry stone building with a retracted, just closed square choir and a sacristy attached to the south, is located on the Kreuzberg and is considered the oldest church in Upper Lusatia. Predecessor buildings have been documented since the 10th century, the oldest parts of the current building date from 1230. The church has been rebuilt and changed many times over the years. In the 15th century the church was significantly damaged during the Hussite Wars , whereupon a renovation in the Gothic style and the vaulting of the hall building took place in 1497–1500. The well-fortified sacristy and its iron-studded double door also date from this period. The church porch was built in the 17th century, the keystone of which refers to the year 1688. In the 19th century the Gothic vault and the large central pillar were dismantled. Today's dome-like vault rests on four iron columns. The slated roof turret with the pointed helmet roof shapes the silhouette of the place. From 1992 to 1993 the church was restored under the direction of the restorer Thomas Rup . The church has been closed since October 2018 due to static problems on the roof turret.

Furnishing

The south porch with an ornamentally painted groin vault is decorated with reliefs and wall paintings from the end of the 17th century. A richly ornamented Renaissance portal provides access to the church from the vestibule. The altar with a baroque column structure, dated 1730, shows figures of the apostles Peter and Paul on the side, the altar panel around 1790 shows St. Wenceslas. The pulpit, also around 1790, is adorned with gilded festoons and a medallion depicting the parable of the sower. The sound cover is richly curved and also partially gold-plated. The simple octagonal sandstone baptismal font, dated 1497, and a statue of Mary, dated around 1500, are also part of the furnishings.

Community development

Due to the changed pastoral conditions in Görlitz, the parish of St. Wenzeslaus was dissolved with effect from December 31, 2009 by the then Görlitz Bishop Konrad Zdarsa . Together with the parishes of St. Wenzeslaus (Jauernick) and St. Anna (Reichenbach), the new parish of St. Hedwig and St. Wenzeslaus Görlitz-Jauernick was created. St. Wenceslaus was elevated to a collegiate church. On September 1, 2012, this parish became part of the new parish of St. Wenzel Görlitz and the patron saint of the Jauernick Church, which gave the new parish its name.
