St George's In the Fields

The St George's in the Fields is a contemporary residential building and former church building in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1966 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

At the site there was a previous church that was demolished for the construction of the Georgskirche. Scottish architects David and Hugh Barclay provided the design. William Birnie Rhind is responsible for the sculptural design . Construction was completed in 1886. In 1989 the interior of the now obsolete church was rebuilt. Today apartments are set up there.

description

The building is on St George's Road, northwest of Glasgow city center. A portico in the style of Greek temple architecture with six Ionic columns emerges on the south-east exposed front . The final triangular gable is sculptural. It shows a scene of the feeding of the five thousand . The entrance portals are designed with columns and pilasters . Two-story elongated windows are installed along the side façades. A decorative band with Greek ornamentation separates the projectiles. A cornice with a low parapet runs beneath the slate-covered gable roof . There are no more original details in the interior.
