The St John's Church is a Presbyterian Church in the Scottish city of Port Ellen on the Hebridean island of Islay . On April 24, 2003, the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B, making it one of three listed buildings on Frederick Crescent, along with houses  144 and 145 and the Ardview Hotel . The Grange on Lennox Street served as the rectory .

description

The church building was constructed in 1897 and 1898 according to plans by the architect Sydney Mitchell , who four years later built Ramsay Hall in honor of John Ramsay and is known for its numerous church buildings. The opposite side of the road is undeveloped and after a short strip of grass the bay of Loch Leòdamais begins , around which Port Ellen hugs. The building is thus clearly visible from the waterfront and forms a striking contrast to the surroundings.

The building was built from quarry stone on a rectangular base. The edges and parts of the window frames are highlighted in color through the use of black stone. On the west side is a striking bell tower with a pointed helmet. Lancet windows coupled to triplets flank the double-winged entrance portal. There are also four lattice windows . The four axis-wide north and south facades are designed identically with four lattice windows each. Above the pulpit on the west side there is a triplet lancet window.
