description

At the location of today's church there was a previous building. However, the classicist church built in 1797 fell victim to a fire. Today's St Mary's Church was finally built between 1903 and 1905. The Scottish architect Ninian Comper , one of the last important British neo-Gothic architects, was responsible for the design . In 2017 the building was restored. The Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Environment Scotland provided funding for this purpose.

The neo-Gothic church building is in the center of Kirriemuir. In addition to the dominant Neo-Gothic, elements of the Arts and Crafts movement have also flowed into the church architecture. The red sandstone church is divided into three elements. The bell tower with battlements in the west, the adjoining nave of the hall church and the smaller choir . A transverse wing goes off on the south side. The interior was mainly designed by Comper. A stained glass window commemorates his deceased father. The organ installed in 1906 was made by the Edinburgh- based company Hamilton . The bell was cast as early as 1741.
