St Mary's Hospital

The St Mary's Hospital is a hospital in London district of Paddington . The hospital has 495 beds. The hospital includes the private Lindo wing , where many well-known personalities were born.

location

The hospital is north of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens . To the west is Paddington Station , to the north a side canal of the Grand Union Canal .

history

It was founded in 1845. One of its founding members was Isaac Baker Brown , who promoted clitoridectomy as a cure for hysteria. The hospital opened its doors to patients in 1851, the last large voluntary hospital.

In 1874 at St Mary's Hospital of Charles Romley Alder Wright the substance heroin found in 1928 was Alexander Fleming there the penicillin . In his honor, his laboratory was converted into a museum.

The hospital has been operated by the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust since 2008 . Until 1988, the hospital included St Mary's Hospital Medical School , which was part of the University of London . In 1988 the school merged with Imperial College London , and in 1997 with Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School to form the university-independent Imperial College School of Medicine .
