Charles Romley Alder Wright (* 1844 in Southend , Essex , † July 25, 1894 ) was a British chemist.

Wright was a lecturer in chemistry at St Mary's Hospital, London .

From 1874 he succeeded in elucidating the constitution of morphine as part of the structural elucidation of various alkaloids and terpenes . He produced diacetylmorphine ( heroin ) for the first time by acetylating morphine . He also used acid anhydrides such as acetic anhydride for gentle acetylation .

He had the pharmacological use of heroin examined by Frederick M. Pierce at Owens College .

In 1881 he became a member of the Royal Society .

At the same time with C. Thompson he developed a fuel cell .
