St Mary Aldermary is an Anglican church building in the inner city district of the City of London on Bow Lane .
history
The church was extremely damaged in the great fire of London in 1666. Although parts of the foundation, walls and tower survived the fire, it was largely rebuilt in Gothic style by the famous architect Sir Christopher Wren . The money for the reconstruction was donated in 1679 by Anne Rogers, the niece of Junker Henry Rogers from Somerset . Eventually the Anglican Church reopened in 1682.
According to Nikolaus Pevsner , it is one of the most important preserved architectural monuments in the city and the most important church in the country regarding the neo-Gothic style of the late 17th century. The church has undergone numerous repairs and restorations in recent years. The last restoration was completed in April 2005. Only the interior of the church was restored, such as the stucco ceiling. On April 21, 2005 , the completion of the construction work was celebrated with a service led by Richard Chartres , Bishop of London.
organ
The organ goes back to an instrument that was built in 1781 by the organ builders England & Russell (London). The organ was reorganized in 1876 and 1906. The instrument has 35 registers on three manuals and a pedal .
