St Mary of the Angels Basilica
St Mary of the Angels Basilica (Eng .: Basilica of Mary of the Angels ) is a Roman Catholic parish church in Geelong , Victoria , Australia . It is a listed building in the Victorian Heritage Register .
A first wooden chapel on Yarra Street opened on November 27, 1842. As early as 1846, the construction of a brick church began on the site of today's basilica, which was completed in the following year under PB Geoghegan. A rapidly growing community, in the optimism of the Victorian gold rush, led to plans for a cathedral-like landmark for the city, 61 meters long and 40 meters wide. The foundation stone for today's church was laid in 1854, the neo-Gothic plans come from the architects Dowden and Ross. After the construction of the church in Blaustein began, the boom came to a standstill in 1856. The church was not continued until 1871 and completed in 1872. The church towers could be added between 1931 and 1937. The bronze cross at the top of the 46 meter high crossing tower was cast by Evans & Co. in 1935 and is 2.4 meters high. As the tallest building, the church is an important landmark in the city.
In 2004 the church was opened by Pope Benedict XVI. raised to the fifth basilica minor of Australia.
