The Rudolstadt State Archives are one of six state archives in the Free State of Thuringia that belong to the Thuringia State Archives and are located in the rooms of Heidecksburg Castle in Rudolstadt .

Archive history

The archive was created at the beginning of the 17th century as the “Archivum commune”, a document archive in which the documents belonging to the two duchies of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt were stored. In addition, government archives for the princely house and court authorities existed in the three Schwarzburg royal cities of Arnstadt , Rudolstadt and Sondershausen , which remained side by side until the 20th century. After the state of Thuringia was founded in 1920, these archives were continued as the Thuringian State Archives; they were abolished in 1929 for the Arnstadt State Archives and in 1952 for the Sonderhäuser Landesarchiv. In the archive organization of the GDR, the Rudolstadt regional archive was made independent as the state archive for the Gera district . After the re-establishment of the Free State of Thuringia, it operated as the Thuringian State Archive from 1991 to 2016; since the Thuringian archive reform in 2016, the Rudolstadt State Archive has been a department of the newly formed Thuringia State Archive .

Jurisdiction

Before 1918/1920, its historical jurisdiction extended to the counties and later duchies of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and their predecessor territories. In the state of Thuringia , the Rudolstadt State Archives were responsible for state central and subordinate authorities and district administrative authorities of the Arnstadt , Rudolstadt , Saalfeld and Sondershausen districts. In the archive organization of the GDR , from 1952 to 1990 it was only responsible for the district administrative institutions and state-owned companies in the Gera district . Since the re-establishment of the Free State, the responsibility of the State Archives Rudolstadt has included the middle and lower state authorities and subordinate federal authorities based in the city of Gera as well as the districts of Ilm-Kreis, Saalfeld-Rudolstadt, Saale-Orla-Kreis and Saale-Holzlandkreis.
