The State Archives of the Canton of Zug (formerly: Cantonal Archives Zug ) in Zug is the central archive of the Canton of Zug .

task

The Archives Act passed in 2004 defines the State Archives as a competence center for cantonal and communal archives . In addition, it has the task of promoting historical research in the field of national, local and personal history. As the central archive for the canton's organs, it takes over their documents, keeps them permanently and makes them available to the public as archive material . The archive thus contributes to legal certainty and enables state action to be traced in the long term. It is also committed to securing third-party documents that are worth archiving if they are of cantonal importance. The documents stored in the State Archives are open to all interested parties within the framework of the applicable protection periods.

history

Since the city of Zug was the capital of the canton of Waldstätten from 1799–1802 , the so-called Waldstätter archive was also located here, which documented official activities at the cantonal level and thus affected the whole of central Switzerland. At the end of the Helvetic Republic , most of it was probably left in Zug. These historical papers were stored in various locations before they were moved to the newly built government council building in 1872, supplemented by more recent cantonal archives . In 1979, Peter Hoppe, a full-time state archivist, was elected for the first time. The professionalization of the State Archives marks a turning point in the organization of its holdings. If the documents have been sorted according to an overall registration plan or according to pertinence by this point in time , more recent submissions will be archived according to the principle of provenance .

In 1991 the archive moved from the government building and several outdoor magazines to a new building. In 2007, the area of non-official holdings would receive a significant increase after the Zug City Council had decided previously in the city and Kantonsbibliothek custody manuscripts and discounts handed over to the State Archives.

In the 2010s, the digitization of particularly valuable archive holdings and the introduction of digital long-term archiving were implemented.

The archive is regularly presented to the public as part of the Swiss Archives Day .

The Zug State Archives have been headed by Ernst Guggisberg since the beginning of 2019.
