from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On November 5, 2019, there were elections to the state parliament in the United States . In a total of five of the 99 chambers of parliament in the states of Mississippi , New Jersey and Virginia , full parliamentary elections were due that day. On November 16, the two houses of parliament in Louisiana were re-elected. In addition, by-elections for seats in the state legislature were held in some states.

On the same day, elections were also held for governorships and other state and local electoral offices.

overview

In the run-up to the November 2019 state elections, the Democrats controlled 38 chambers of parliament (including a coalition of Democrats, Independents, and Republicans in Alaska ) and the Republicans controlled 61 state legislatures (including the officially nonpartisan Nebraska Legislature ). In 14 states, both the governorship and the legislature were in democratic hands (so-called trifecta ), in 22 states there were republican trifectas and in 14 states there was a divided government .

As a result of the election, the Democrats regained control of the entire legislature of Virginia . For the first time in 25 years they produced a Trifecta in Virginia. In all other legislative elections, the Democrats lost seats, but the Republicans were unable to win a super majority with which it was possible to overrule the governor's vetoes . The Democrats had control of 40 legislatures and the Republicans over 59. A change in power in the Kentucky governorate from Republicans to Democrats now has 15 Democratic and 21 Republican trifectas and 14 states with shared control of the executive and legislative branches.
