The Stabelhøje about 500 m north of Agri on the Mols peninsula on Djursland are among the 25,000 stone and bronze age burial mounds that are preserved and protected in Denmark . Another 5,000 of the original 60,000 have been preserved. They form the predominant type of monument among the prehistoric monuments. The largest of the burial mounds date from the early Bronze Age (1800 to 1000 BC). They were often built on the highest points of the landscape where they looked more monumental.

Mols as the southern Djursland peninsula

The Stabelhøje in the Mols Mountains are harmoniously embedded in the hilly landscape. The 135 and 133 m high hills overlook Aarhus Bay , Knebel , Kalø Castle and its bay and the moraine landscape with Agri Bavnehøj , the highest point at 137 m and about 1,000 m to the southeast.

The as yet unexplored Stabelhøje are extremely well preserved and will probably contain graves from the Bronze Age. At the top of the hill is a row of stones that, like at Egehøj , could belong to the border of the burial mound.

Surroundings

About 50 smaller burial mounds from the same period were located within a radius of about one kilometer from the two mounds, about half of which have been preserved. It is typical that smaller and younger mounds were built in close proximity to the large and old ones, gradually creating a burial ground that can be compared with today's cemeteries. The fact that so many have been preserved here is unusual and can be attributed to the fact that the hilly terrain always hindered agriculture. Stabelhøje was placed under protection in 1878 and is now part of the Mols Bjerge National Park .

Legend

Legend has it that the spirits living in the hills prevented people from building a church on the hills for almost 1,000 years. Whether this is the reason why the Church of Agri is in the village remains to be seen.
