history
Georges Gratiant (* 1907; † 1992) was 1946–1947 President of the General Council of Martinique and 1959–1989 Mayor of Le Lamentin. He initiated the construction of the large stadium in the early 1980s, which was inaugurated in 1988. After Gratiants death, the stadium, which was originally called the Stade de Place d'Armes , was renamed after the name of the city's long-time mayor.
In 1988 a football match between the national teams of Martinique and Trinidad and Tobago took place on site.
