Betty Kaunda

Betty Kaunda (born November 17, 1928 in Chinsali as Beatrice Kaweche Banda , † September 19, 2012 in Harare ) was the wife of Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda and First Lady of Zambia from 1964 to 1991.

Life

Betty, the daughter of Kaweche Banda and Milika Sakala Banda, grew up in Mpika . After her training at the Mindolo Ecumenical Foundation , she worked as a teacher in Mufulira . In 1946 she married her husband, Kenneth Kaunda . In May 2012 she was recognized by President Michael Sata for her contribution to the struggle for independence. She died in Harare in 2012 .
