The Stadio Danilo Martelli is the municipal football stadium of the northern Italian city of Mantua in the Region of Lombardy . The playing field is surrounded by an athletics facility, which cannot be used due to the construction of a grandstand. The football club Mantova 1911 SSD plays its home games here.

history

The Stadio Danilo Martelli opened in 1961 and currently offers 14,884 seats. It bears the name of the Italian football player Danilo Martelli , who was part of the Grande Torino team and who was killed in the Superga plane crash on May 4, 1949 . In 1977 part of the roof was destroyed by a tornado . In 2005, the AC Mantova rose to Serie B and in order to meet the requirements of the second division, a towering tubular steel grandstand was set up in a curve behind the goal.

2005, planning began for the construction of a new stadium outside the city, and for the Serie A would be suitable. In February of that year the construction of an arena with 16,000 seats was approved for 21 million euros . The Italian association FIGC had meanwhile increased the minimum size in the first division to 20,000 spectators. It is unclear what will happen to the old stadium and the former horse racing track next to it. The date for the start of construction has been postponed again and again. In July 2009 the city withdrew its financial resources and showed no further interest in a new building. This means that a new stadium in Mantua has been put aside.
