The Stadium Merdeka (Independence Stadium) is a stadium in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia . It is one of the places where the Malaya Federation's formal declaration of independence was held on August 31, 1957 and the nation's first modern building. The stadium was a venue in Kuala Lumpur for celebrations and sporting events until 1962 when the Negara Stadium was built. In 2008 the Stadium Merdeka received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Excellence for Heritage Conservation for its cultural significance and design of a declaration of independence event.
