The Hungen city archive is the archive of the city of Hungen in the district of Gießen in Hesse. The archive includes holdings from the core town of Hungen and the ten districts of Bellersheim , Inheiden , Langd , Nonnenroth , Obbornhofen , Rabertshausen , Rodheim , Steinheim , Trais-Horloff and Utphe . The holdings of the Villingen district are looked after by their own homeland association.

In 2012 the archive moved from the basement of the Hungen town hall and other rooms in the districts to a new building. The house was built on the site of a barn (house 4) in the former Hof Grass estate, which was renovated from 2010 to 2012, southeast of Hungen. It houses a restaurant on the ground floor. The neighboring building has been used by the regional Limes information center of the district of Gießen for its permanent exhibition since the same year. The farm estate is owned by the municipal energy supply company OVAG , which allows the city of Hungen to use the building for at least 25 years - until 2037. The city of Hungen participated in the redevelopment.

The archive material is housed in three storage rooms, the largest measuring 90 square meters, with roll-top cabinets. Due to the weight of the paper, the ceiling between the restaurant and the archive is five times more resilient than that of a residential building.

In addition to a small reference library, the city archive houses over 35,000 individual files as well as a newspaper archive, photos and old films. Its holdings go back to 1410. Outstanding archive materials include a seal of the town of Hungen (“Opidi Houngen”) from the 16th to 17th centuries and a log book of the Hungen Jewish community from 1826 to 1906 that was preserved during the Nazi era. For all Hungen districts There are local heritage books before the city archives.
