The Lippstadt City Archive is the municipal archive of the city of Lippstadt . It documents the history of the city and its districts. The total inventory comprises around 1600 running meters of archival material, divided into different types of documents and the respective provenance . The seat of the city archive is the “Alte Steinwerk” in Soeststrasse.

History of the city archive

The city archive dates back to the time of the city charter around 1220. The oldest documents include privileges, alliance agreements and other legally binding documents. The documents were kept in a chest with several locks in the town hall. There were also so-called key masters who each owned a key. They could only open the chest or the locks together.

In the course of time, however, many stocks have been destroyed by external influences such as fire, water damage or war.

In the 17th century, a "service instruction" regulated the management of the archive, with which the city secretary was entrusted. In the following years, the city syndic was used for the task.

Until well into the 20th century, constant work was carried out on recording the archive holdings and creating an inventory overview. a. by secondary school teacher and historian Robert Chalybäus, the high school teacher Hesselbarth and from the 1950s by archivist Franz Herberhold .

Due to the local reorganization in 1975 , the old district of Lippstadt was dissolved and new districts were created through incorporation. You had to create more space to take over your archives. As a result, in 1976 the archive was moved to the former building of the Stadtsparkasse, at Spielplatzstrasse 16, where the city library and the adult education center were also located. Due to its better accessibility, the archive became attractive and the number of visitors rose steadily. The newly created archive library was added at the beginning of 1978. Franz Herberhold, born in Lippstadt and archivist in Münster, has made special contributions to the rebuilding and reorganization. He supported the council and administration for the proper accommodation and processing of the stored files. From 1982 to 1993 the city archive was headed by Hartwig Walberg as the first full-time and professionally trained archivist. After the position of archivist remained vacant for years after Walberg's departure, Claudia Becker has been the full-time archivist of the Lippstadt City Archives since 2002.

On May 16, 1991, the archive moved from the building in Spielplatzstrasse to the new archive building at Soeststrasse 8 "Old Stone Works". Since then it has had its own house with storage, workshop and office space, a spacious reading room, which can also be used as a public meeting place for lectures and the like. a. is used, another seminar room and a small exhibition area in the entrance area. The archive is housed there to this day; it underwent a renovation in spring 2016, which was celebrated together with the 25th anniversary on Archive Day , March 6, 2016.

"Altes Steinwerk" building

discovery

In 1981, a stone house with meter-thick walls made of quarry stone was discovered on the rear part of the Laumanns printing works .

After uncovering numerous traces of construction, the presumption was confirmed that the building was one of the few remaining stone hall buildings, a so-called stone work, from the 15th century, which was presumably a half-timbered house on Soeststrasse. A painted wooden beam ceiling was also discovered, which dates from the 17th century and for which it is not known who the artist was.

Conversions and current use

The extensive destruction of its internal structure and its external appearance did not affect the stone works until the 1930s. The front building was demolished and the stone work was given a flat roof. Inside, a new floor division was made. The former ceiling of the hall was suspended so that fortunately the painted ceiling was preserved. In the end, the stone works served as a photo laboratory and heating room.

In the years 1988 to 1991 the building was restored as part of an urban development measure in coordination with the Westphalian Office for the Preservation of Monuments and an extension was added based on the layout of the earlier half-timbered building. Today the city archive and a public meeting place are located here, which is used by the Heimatbund Lippstadt, among others.
