Franz Herberhold

Franz Bernhard Herberhold (* December 21, 1906 in Lippstadt ; † August 4, 1979 in Münster ) was the head of the State Archives in Sigmaringen and State Archives Director in Münster. He made particular contributions to the expansion of the municipal archives and published important works on the history of the country.

Life

Franz Herberhold was born the son of a typesetter. After attending the Catholic Rector's School in Lippstadt, he switched to the St. Ludwig Franciscan College in Vlodrop in the Netherlands from 1920 , and in 1925 he passed the Abitur examination at the grammar school in Werl as an external student . In autumn 1925 he began to study theology at the Philosophical-Theological Academy in Paderborn , in the spring of 1928 he moved to Würzburg, where he also attended seminars in history, German and Romance studies; in March 1929 he gave up theology. The most important teachers in Würzburg were Max Buchner and Anton Chroust . There he met Elisabeth Zenger from Saal an der Saale , who was also a student of Buchner and whom he married in 1935. In Würzburg, Herberhold belonged to the Gothia student union (CV). Herberhold completed his studies in February 1931 with a dissertation on Otto von Lobdeburg (Bishop of Würzburg 1207-1223). In order to get a job in Prussia, he completed one semester in Münster and two in Greifswald , where in February 1933 he acquired the teaching qualification for school service (history, Catholic theology, Latin); the most important teacher was Adolf Hofmeister . In Greifswald he befriended the pastor Alfons Maria Wachsmann , who was arrested in 1943 and executed in 1944 for his critical stance on the Nazi regime. Herberhold dedicated a biography to him in 1963.

From April 1933 to July 1934 Herberhold attended the Prussian Institute for Archival Science in Berlin-Dahlem. For the next six months he was assigned to the State Archives in Münster , in 1935 he was employed here as a permanent research assistant, in July 1936 he was appointed archive assistant and taken over into the civil service. During this time he published on the history of the city of Erwitte and prepared the presentation of the architectural and art monuments in the Brilon district (published from 1952). In April 1938, Herberhold was appointed the first full-time director of the State Archives in Sigmaringen , where he helped to set up the previously insignificant archive and published numerous articles on the history of the south-west of Germany. Herberhold was a soldier for three months in 1940, then from 1943 to 1945, but was able to return to Sigmaringen immediately. In 1946 he initiated the first conference of south-west German archivists. In 1951 he was appointed senior archivist to manage the planned move to the Freiburg i.Br. City Archives. to avert.

Herberhold worked in his hometown in the 1950s and campaigned for the rebuilding of the city ​​archive and a reorganization of the archive holdings. At the beginning of September 1957 Herberhold left the civil service and returned to Münster, where the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe hired him as a state archivist. There, at the beginning of 1958, he took over the management of the archives advisory office of the landscape association, which had been headed by the head of the state archive Johannes Bauermann since 1933 , but was now to be made independent and upgraded. The office had to be expanded and expanded by Herberhold. In 1961, on his initiative, it was renamed the State Office for Archive Maintenance (today LWL Archive Office for Westphalia ). In 1959 a separate archive for the files of the regional association and its predecessor, the Provinzialverband Westfalen, was attached to the office. The most important task of the State Office was to advise the numerous municipal and private archives (especially aristocratic archives) in Westphalia. The specialist training for municipal archivists goes back to his initiative, the so-called Duisburg courses (since 1964), in which inspectors of the municipal administration received additional training in archiving. The Westphalian Archive Days , which have been held annually since 1971, were also created on his initiative as an exchange opportunity for archivists. Particular attention was paid to the aristocratic archives, several of which he recorded himself. In 1962 Herberhold was appointed State Archives Director, and in 1971 Chief State Archives Director. At the special request of the regional association, Herberhold did not retire until April 1, 1974, two years after reaching the age limit; his successor was Helmut Richtering . The most important work of his renewed activity in Münster was the Ravensberger Urbar , which appeared in three volumes .

Herberhold had five children with his wife Elisabeth. Elisabeth died in 1973.

Memberships and honors

In 1954 Herberhold was appointed a member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia , from 1963 to 1970 he was a member of the board (at times as managing director). Herberhold was also a member of the Württemberg Commission for Regional History (1954 merged with the Commission for Historical Regional Studies in Baden-Württemberg ). He was a member of the board of directors of the Association of German Archivists for many years, after which he was made an honorary member in 1969. The United Westfälische Adelsarchive eV also made him an honorary member in 1974. On the initiative of the Association of German Archivists, Herberhold received the Great Federal Cross of Merit in 1975 .
