Adolf Hofmeister (born August 9, 1883 in Rostock , † April 7, 1956 in Greifswald ) was a German historian . Hofmeister taught from 1921 to 1955 as a professor at the University of Greifswald .

Life and accomplishments

Adolf Ludwig Eduard Hofmeister was born on August 9, 1883 in Rostock as the son of the university librarian Adolph Hofmeister (1848–1904). He studied history, historical auxiliary sciences and ancient languages ​​at the University of Rostock , the University of Halle-Wittenberg and the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin . In 1901 he joined the Rostock , later also the Halle (1902) and the Berlin Wingolf (1903).

His scientific interest was initially in the high medieval empire, including Burgundy and Italy. In Berlin he was in 1905 when Dietrich Schafer Dr. phil. PhD with a dissertation on margraves and margraves in the Italian kingdom . He then became a full-time employee, from 1913 assistant director at the central management of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica (MGH). In 1909 he completed his habilitation at the University of Berlin with studies on Otto von Freising . In 1913 he received the title of professor.

In 1921 Hofmeister was appointed full professor for middle and modern history at the University of Greifswald , where he succeeded Ernst Bernheim . At first he continued to work at the MGH, from 1927 as a member of the central management until it was dissolved in 1935.

In Greifswald, Hofmeister turned to the history of Pomerania . From 1924 he published the new series of Monuments in Pomeranian History . In his work The Battle for the Baltic Sea from the 9th to the 12th Century (1st edition 1931) he also commented on the question of the location of the legendary city of Vineta ; the city named in the sources is to be equated with the city of Wollin . With his essay The Counting of the Pomeranian Dukes (1937) he presented a proposal for a count of the dukes of the Greifenhaus , which has largely prevailed. Hofmeister had been a member of the Historical Commission for Pomerania since 1923 and a board member since 1925 . He was also head of the Greifswald University Archives from 1931 to 1955 (as the first full professor at the university) .

Hofmeister was one of the university teachers who were allowed to continue working in the GDR without being a Marxist . In 1953 he was appointed to the main history section of the German Academy of Sciences in the GDR . He retired in 1955. He died on April 7, 1956 in Greifswald.
