Gotthilf Christian Adolph Hofmeister (born September 21, 1848 in Gera , † December 29, 1904 in Rostock ) was a German historian and librarian.

Life

Adolph Hofmeister was born in Gera as the son of the editor of the same name, Adolph (Georg Xaver) Hofmeister. He attended the secondary school there from 1864, the Rutheneum in Schleiz from 1866 and the royal collegiate high school in Zeitz from 1867 to 1871. From 1871 to 1874 he studied Classical Philology and History at the Friedrichs University in Halle . In Halle he joined the Pomerania country team . From 1874 he worked as a private tutor in the province of Poznan . He was awarded Dr. phil. PhD and worked as a volunteer at the University Library in Halle from October . In 1877 he became the last member of the Halle Corps Pomerania. In January 1878 he moved to the Rostock University Library , where he worked as curator from June. In 1894 he became First Curator and from 1896 he held the title of First University Librarian. For a long time he was also the administrator of the university's coin cabinet.

Hofmeister was active in numerous associations and societies. From 1879 he was a member of the Association for Mecklenburg History and Archeology and from 1893 to 1904 a board member of the Association for Rostock Antiquities. In 1900 he was one of the founding members of the Association of German Librarians . He was a member of the Hanseatic History Association , the Association for Low German Linguistics and the Society for Pomeranian History and Archeology . He was only 56 years old.

Hofmeister initially wrote on topics of classical philology, later on library studies and historical works as well as works on university history. In addition to his work at the university library, he was often concerned with the history of Mecklenburg . From 1883 to 1887 he was an employee of the Mecklenburg Advertisers and from 1887 to 1904 for the Rostocker Anzeiger . Here he wrote u. a. Overviews of Mecklenburg literature. From 1891 to 1902 the literature overviews for the annual reports of historical studies , published by the Historical Society in Berlin , came from his hand . In 1890/91 he was involved in the Mecklenburg document books , from 1896 to 1902 in the five volumes published by Friedrich Schlie , Die Kunst und Geschistordenkmäler des Großherzogtums Mecklenburg-Schwerin, and in 1893/94 he wrote articles for the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie . An important piece of work was the publication of the register of the University of Rostock (1419-1789) in four volumes between 1886 and 1904.

Hofmeister's son of the same name, Adolf Hofmeister (born August 9, 1883 in Rostock, † April 7, 1956 in Greifswald) was also known as a scientist. He too became a historian and taught from 1921 to 1955 as a professor at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald .
