history

The Vechtedorf Welbergen can look back on almost 1000 years of history. It was founded by the Metelen Monastery before 1100 . The Catholic parish is mentioned for the first time in 1139. In 1666, the Plague Cemetery Welbergen was created outside the village .

Welbergen is home to one of the oldest preserved parish churches in the Münsterland: the oldest parts of the parish church of St. Dionysius date from the early 12th century and thus from the Romanesque period . When the late Gothic choir was added (1511) the nave was increased, recognizable in the half-timbering on the north side. Inside are some fragments of wall painting from the time the choir was built, probably depictions of the apostles . The church was thoroughly repaired in 1954.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Welbergen wanted a new parish church. The architects Kersting and Wenker from Münster were commissioned to plan a stately church - measured by the size of the village - which was built in the then modern neo-Gothic style. The consecration by Bishop Dingelstad took place on June 15, 1908.

On July 1, 1969, Welbergen was incorporated into the city of Ochtrup.

House Welbergen

The Lords of Welleberghe lived on the moated castle Haus Welbergen from 1298 to 1330 . There were various changes of ownership over the centuries until the water castle was sold to the banker Jordaan van Heek at the end of the 1920s. After the death of his widow Bertha Jordaan van Heek, Haus Welbergen with extensive property was transferred to a foundation that bears the name of the founder Bertha Jordaan van Heek. House Welbergen has a rich archive, the most valuable part of which is the correspondence from the circle of Baron von Fürstenberg and Princess von Gallitzin.

The park of the house Welbergen belongs to the European Garden Heritage Network (European garden network). The formal garden of the inner courtyard contrasts with the herbaceous beds along the castle walls and the wooded surroundings, which are only crossed by a few paths. The inner courtyard can be visited at any time.
