The moated castle Haus Welbergen is a listed moated castle in Welbergen , a district of Ochtrup in the Steinfurt district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The umgräftete plant is about 1.5 km south of Bökerhook. It has been traceable since the 13th century and consists of the manor house , the irregular outer bailey and outbuildings. The Lords of Welleberghe resided on the estate from 1298 to 1330. The house stands freely in the water in an extended section of the main shaft. The tree-lined complex is located in the middle of an extensive system of ditches that is fed by the Gauxbach .

The mansion was rebuilt from 1560 to 1570 by Christian von Oldenhus. He integrated a narrow porch with a basement in the southwest. A thorough interior renovation, with new installation of windows and staircase, took place from 1730 to 1733. The stucco decorations on the chimneys and ceilings were extensively restored between 1744 and 1746 and reconstructed as required. The gables and ridge chimneys were renewed in 1776. The gatehouse wing of the outer bailey and the curtain wall with three pavilions were probably built between 1625 and 1632. In the 18th and 19th centuries, they were partially renewed and stuccoed inside. The middle pavilion has been used as the so-called Marienkapelle since 1731. The furnishings are from the 18th and 19th centuries. Other remise and farm buildings from 1745 and 1890 belong to the complex . The manor house is a seven-axis, rectangular brick building with three-tier gables . It is regularly structured by windows and cornices made of stone . A single-axis canopy with a three-tiered gable is arranged asymmetrically in the main facade. The portal is marked with 1731. There is a knitter on the south facade . A wooden chimney is placed over the fireplace in the kitchen; An up-chamber is located above a vaulted cellar. Access to the outer bailey is via the former drawbridge . The gatehouse is equipped with a three-tier gable. The adjoining farm and coach house buildings are made of brick and are sparingly structured with stone. The garden was laid out from 1965 to 1966. To the north-east there is a watermill with a shed, the single - storey half-timbered building under a hipped roof is filled with brick. It is labeled 1802. Behind the mill was the former, enclosed baroque garden , a gate pillar is marked with 1730. Another pair of gate pillars stands south of the granary. It served as access to the former landscape garden from the late 18th century. The main access leads over a sandstone bridge from 1755.

Situation from 1920

The owners changed over the centuries. Through his marriage to Gertrud von Buchholtz, Franz Ferdinand von Druffel and then his sons Franz Carl and Clemens came into possession. At the end of the 1920s the plant was sold to the banker Jordaan van Heek. After the death of his widow Bertha Jordaan van Heek, the house with extensive property was transferred to a foundation that bears the name of the founder Bertha Jordaan van Heek. In the Welbergen house there is a rich archive, the most important part of which is the correspondence of Baron von Fürstenberg and Princess Amalie von Gallitzin . The house is currently (2012) used for conferences.

The inner courtyard of the moated castle and circular paths are freely accessible all year round.
