The Wedel City Archive is a municipal archive. It secures the historical tradition of the city of Wedel (Schleswig-Holstein) and the formerly incorporated villages of Schulau and Spitzerdorf. The registry office documents also include the municipality of Holm .

history

The oldest holdings in the city archive go back to the 17th century. The extent of the archive is around 600 running meters. There were few war casualties to complain about. In addition to the official documents, there are also extensive collections in the city archive. It has been headed full-time since 1984 and is located in the basement of the town hall in Wedel, Rathausplatz 3–5. A large part of the historical files and collections can be researched online.

Photo collections

There is an extensive collection of images in the city archive. Among other things, there are photos by the photographers Arnold Petersen, Johann Diedrich Möller , Günther Schumacher, Max Broders and Richard Hünten. The photo collection includes around 26,000 images (photos, negatives, slides and photo albums). The historical photo archive of the Wedel-Schulauer-Tageblatt is also in the city archive. The photos cannot yet be researched online.

Collections and bequests

One of the most important collections in the city archive is the Johann Rist Archive. It includes copies of documents from other archives about the Baroque poet and pastor Johann Rist (1607–1667). Originals and copies of his numerous works and a reference library complete these documents. As early as the 1960s and 1970s, documents from various archives and libraries were collected and sorted in the city administration. At the same time, Heinz Kegel, the cantor of the Wedel parish, collected documents on Johann Rist. Due to a contractual agreement between the parish and the city of Wedel, the city archive took over the collection after Heinz Kegel's death in December 2003 and merged both collections.

The estate of the painter Rudolf Höckner (1864–1942) includes his diaries and sketchbooks as well as private correspondence.

The estate of the artist couple Vilma Lehrmann-Amschler and Alfred Amschler includes private correspondence and an extensive photo collection.

Smaller collections are available on the following people: Ernst Barlach (1870–1938), Hermann Molkenbuhr (1851–1927), Hellmuth Walter (1900–1980), Fritz Singer (1901–1984) and Margret Bechler (1914–2002).

The city's poster collection can be researched online.
