The Stadtbad on Mühlenstrasse was designed in the Bauhaus style in 1925 by city planning director Fred Otto . It was intended to replace the Hedwigbad , built in 1866/1867 (1843 is mentioned elsewhere ) on what was then Hedwigstrasse, which no longer met the needs of the rapidly growing city of Chemnitz .

With the groundbreaking on May 22, 1929, work began on building the new municipal swimming pool. Construction stalled from 1930 to 1934 due to the turbulence of the global economic crisis, so that the pool could not be opened until March 27, 1935. In its time it was one of the largest and most modern indoor pools in Europe with its 50 meter long pool. In 1983 the building was renovated. The architect Karl-Heinz Barth was awarded the Architecture Prize of the German Democratic Republic and the Schinkel Medal of the Association of Architects of the GDR in 1984 for the successful execution .

The figurative design of the Stadtbad, for example the flag base with the groups of water animals at the entrance area, is the work of Bruno Ziegler .

During the flood in 2002 , the basement of the municipal swimming pool was flooded.

In August 2010 the pool was reopened after a long renovation phase. However, the renovation mainly focused on the sanitary facilities, as the bathroom is hardly allowed to be changed due to the monument protection requirements. Shortly afterwards, the basement with the technical systems was full during the flood in 2010 and the bathroom had to close again for a few months for the necessary repairs.

Even with the flood of 2013 , the technical systems in the basement of the bath were affected again, so that the bath had to close for a few months.
