The Stadtbadt 1919 (then still Nordbad)

The Stadtbad is a building in the northern suburb of Leipzig that was used as an indoor swimming pool for 88 years . In 2004 the baths were closed due to structural defects. A support foundation tries to renovate and revitalize the house.

Location and building description

The municipal swimming pool is located on the western side of the center as an arterial road leading to the north Eutritzscher street at number 21 in the district center-north.

The Art Nouveau building is a three-wing complex with a central section set back from the street. This central main building has a semicircular porch and is crowned by a tower structure. Its triangular gable is decorated with a city coat of arms held by two lions.

The Stadtbad had two separate swimming pools for women and men. The men's swimming pool was a bit larger at 32 meters by 12 meters, had a 3-meter springboard and a wave system for waves up to one meter high, the first in Europe in an indoor pool. There were medical and therapeutic options, such as bathtubs and sweat baths, and two separate sauna areas. The women's sauna in the Islamic-Moorish style was an architectural highlight. Magnificent columns and arches, filigree patterns with gold decorations and decorative wall mosaics adorned the rooms.

history

In the 19th century there were already several privately operated indoor swimming pools in Leipzig, such as the Sophienbad in Dorotheenstraße (from 1912 Otto-Schill-Straße) and the Dianabad in Langen Straße. The city only operated a simple bathroom with tubs, showers and a sauna within the old Jacob Hospital on Rosentalgasse. This was closed in 1906.

In 1912 construction began on Eutritzscher Strasse according to plans by Otto Wilhelm Scharenberg . The architectural sculpture was based on designs by Mathieu Molitor . The facility, initially known as Nordbad, was put into operation on July 15, 1916.

After the Second World War , the bath could be put back into operation. In the 1980s there were extensive restorations mainly inside the building. Nevertheless, the Stadtbad had to close in July 2004 due to structural defects. A marketing attempt in 2007 did not find an investor. The energy-efficient roof renovation including the vaulted ceilings was carried out from 2010 to 2012 with federal funds from the economic stimulus package II .

To prevent further deterioration, the municipal waterworks Leipzig set up a support foundation in 2006 which is committed to the renovation and revitalization of the pool. Various types of events are sporadically held in parts of the building. Part of the program of the Wave-Gotik-Treffen takes place here. Since March 1, 2013, there has been an unlimited tenancy between the City of Leipzig and the Foundation. The intention to privatize still exists, whereby, however, continued operation as a municipal pool or a pool-like use is made a condition.
