His father was the chess master Johann Molitor. In the period from 1879 to 1887, while attending primary school, there were numerous moves to Germany, France, Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg.

From 1887 to 1889, Molitor completed an apprenticeship in canal and railway construction. From 1889 to 1892 he was a surveyor , draftsman and construction clerk in the civil engineering department in Cologne. He then completed an apprenticeship with the decorative painter L. Manza in Cologne. In 1893 he held a managerial position in a Cologne painting business. There he led journeyman and it resulted in his first independent work, among other things he created 12 ceiling paintings for the Cafe Maximilian in Cologne. In 1894 he studied at the Grand Ducal Saxon Art School in Weimar under Professor Max Thedy . In 1898 he came to Leipzig , presumably on the initiative of his friend, the bookseller Ludwig Volkmann (Breitkopf & Härtel), and worked for the Breitkopf & Härtel music publisher and the FE Wachsmuth school picture publisher .

By marrying Helene Brehmer, daughter of the authorized signatory Hermann Brehmer, on May 23, 1902 , he found access to higher society. With Helene he had a son and a daughter.

Mathieu Molitor was a member of the German Association of Artists . He was a very diverse artist with his work. His work spans bronzes, centerpieces , landscape paintings , portraits, etchings, posters and bookplates . For the Leipziger Stadtbad he created designs for building sculptures. Later his works show traits of expressionism .

Molitor is known as the creator of the two groups of figures, the double statue of Mephisto and Faust and enchanted students at the entrance to Auerbachs Keller in Leipzig and the 5 m wide oil painting Easter Walk , for which Molitor was the model for the figure of Faust. In 1905 he created the belt tie for the inner courtyard of the main university building in Jena, a gift from the corps of the Jena Seniors' Convent . He participated with landscapes and portraits in exhibitions of the Leipziger Künstlerverein in the Kunsthalle Bremen and the Kunstakademie Weimar .
