Hermann Josef Schmitz (born November 12, 1936 in Cologne , † November 18, 2016 in Willich ) was a German politician ( CDU ). From 1990 to 2000 he was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia .

Professional background

After elementary school, Hermann Josef Schmitz attended the Dreikönigsgymnasium in Cologne until 1953 . He completed the agricultural training that followed on October 4, 1958 as a certified farmer at the Rhenish Higher Agricultural School in Brühl. On June 30, 1961, he passed the agricultural master's examination at the Rhineland Chamber of Agriculture . Since 1963 he worked as a self-employed farmer .

From 1987 to 2003 Schmitz was chairman of the Krefeld-Viersen district farming community and was a member of the board of the Rhenish Agricultural Association (RLV) . Between 1993 and 1999 he was Vice President of the RLV. In addition, Schmitz was chairman of the Rhenish Association of Hunting Owners and Hunting Cooperatives from 1997 to 2009. In 1996 he was elected to the board of the Raiffeisen Waren-Zentrale Rhein-Main (RWZ) and to its honorary board chairman. He held this office until 2000.

Schmitz joined the CDU in 1972. Just two years later he was elected to the Willich city council, of which he was a member from 1975 to 1990. From 1980 to 1988 he headed the CDU city association Willich as chairman. In 1981 he became deputy chairman of the CDU district association Viersen. In the local elections on September 30, 1984, Schmitz was also elected to the district council of the Viersen district, to which he belonged until 1994.

From May 31, 1990 to June 1, 2000 Schmitz was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia. In the 11th electoral term he moved into parliament via the CDU's state list, on which he was on list position 43. In the 12th electoral term , Schmitz was directly elected to the state parliament as a direct candidate in the Viersen I state constituency. In the state parliament he was a member of the Committee on Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Nature Conservation, as well as the Committee on Europe and One World Policy.

On November 18, 2016, a week after his 80th birthday, Hermann Josef Schmitz died on the local farm. He leaves behind his wife and two children. The CDU of the district of Viersen paid tribute to his "Rhenish humor" in its obituary and described him as a "representative of the old people".

Awards

In 2000, Hermann Josef Schmitz was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his diverse commitment . In 2003 he received the Felix-Freiherr-von-Loe plaque of honor from the Rhenish Agricultural Association .
