The Addis Ababa light rail system is the light rail system of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa . The project started in December 2011 by the Ethiopian Railway Corporation is being carried out by the China Railway Group and financed by loans from the China Exim Bank . The 31.6-kilometer standard-gauge light rail is electrified and has two tracks over its entire length. The opening of public operations on the first 17 km long line from the center to the industrial south took place on September 21, 2015.

A 17.4-kilometer route connects the Hailoch Gate as an east-west axis from Ayat via Tor Hailoch , Legehar ( La Gare ) and Mexico Square. The second, 16.9 km long route runs between Menelik-II- Platz, Merkato , Lideta , Legehar, Meskel-Platz , Gotera and Kaliti (in a roughly north-south direction). Both lines meet in the city center and run together over a distance of 2.7 kilometers. The system has a total of 39 stations.

Each train has a capacity of 286 passengers, per hour and direction a capacity of 15,000 passengers and thus 60,000 passengers in all four directions from the city center was planned. A total of around 150,000 people use the light rail system every day.
A single ticket costs two Ethiopian birr , the equivalent of six euro cents .
