The Châtillon-sur-Seine municipal library is a listed building from the early 17th century in the French city of Châtillon-sur-Seine . It has been registered in the register of monuments as Monument historique since 1993 .

location

The city library is located on Rue des Avocats in the Bourg district in the south of Châtillon-sur-Seine , west of the former Carmelite convent .

history

Also known as the Royal Auditorium ( Auditoire Royal ), it was built in the first quarter of the 17th century to house the Bailliage de la Montagne and the town hall of the Bourg district . In 1607 the houses on the property were acquired and on January 10, 1611, a decree approved the sum of 4,000 livres for the construction of the auditorium. The year 1619 is engraved on the beams of the dungeons , which are located in the basement of the main building. When, after many difficulties, a joint municipality was created for the districts of Le Bourg and Chaumont (royal decree of Louis XIII from 1638), the Royal Auditorium became the seat of the town hall of these two combined districts.

In 1654 the city chamber ( chambre de ville ) was completely redesigned, including the interior. Under the Ancien Régime , the building housed the city police and during the French Revolution the auditorium became the seat of the District Court.

The building, given to the French state in 1805 - in exchange for the former Carmelite convent - was completely converted into a prison that lasted until 1926. In the course of the 19th century, the external staircase was rebuilt, which provided access to the ground floor from the front courtyard. The old staircase, which can be seen on a plan from 1804, was double-run with converging stairways. The building has been used by the city library since 1945. The entrance gate with two wrought iron double doors from the 18th century comes from the Charité building that was destroyed in 1940 .

Duration

20,000 historical volumes are kept on the first floor. The core of this collection consists of works from the confiscation of 1790, which were in the possession of various monasteries in the city and come from the Benedictine libraries in Molesme and Pothières .
