The Halle City Library is a public library operated by the City of Halle (Saale) as the institution responsible for the facility.
history
On November 14, 1874, the “Association for People's Welfare” opened a public library in the town hall. In 1892 the company was able to move into its own rooms in Rathausstrasse.
The foundation stone for the new building of a reading hall was laid in 1904. On June 4, 1905, the reading hall on Hallmarkt in the newly built house in Salzgrafenstrasse 2 was ceremoniously handed over. The owner was the Association for People's Welfare.
In 1921 the building became the responsibility of the city of Halle. A first branch was opened in 1930 in the south of the city, in Böllberger Weg. A music library was inaugurated on November 21, 1934 in the main building on Hallmarkt. Another branch was opened in the north of the city in 1936 and a youth library in the main building the following year.
From 1954 to 1991 the library had the status of a city and district library, which was associated with the establishment of a library network in the Halle district and the methodical guidance of the district's libraries. In 1977 the library network comprised the main library, 13 branch libraries, a mobile library and numerous lending points in companies and other institutions. In 1979 the Artothek was opened in the southern branch and in 1984 - after moving out of the main library - a new music library was opened at Moritzzwinger.
1991–1993 reconstruction measures were carried out in the main library on Hallmarkt . In 1993 seven branches had to be closed. In the following year, 1994, a new district library was opened in the west of the city, in the Neustadt district.
The first internet access, at that time still chargeable, was made available to the users in 1999. In 2003 the media could be researched via the OPAC and one year later electronic loan booking in the central library and an annual fee were introduced.
In 2001 the music library was given new premises in Handel-Karree in Kleine Marktstrasse. In 2003 the city council decided to close another six branch libraries. A new district library for residents in the south of the city was opened in 2004. In 2010, after sixteen years, a new mobile library was put into operation.
An extension to the central library was officially opened on January 23, 2012.
On September 9, 2013, online lending started for users of the Halle City Library .
building
The building at Salzgrafenstraße 2, which was built on Hallmarkt in 1904/1905 and is still used today by the city library, is a listed five-storey plastered building with seven narrow, segment-arched window axes swinging forward between strong wall templates. With its discreetly sculptural facade, which is strongly emphasized vertically, it dominates the space and is a high-quality example of late Art Nouveau architecture in Halle. The design comes from the architects Theodor Lehmann and Gustav Wolff . The building is listed as a library in the register of monuments of the city of Halle under registration number 094 05004.
In the early years after construction, the 3rd and 4th floors were rented to the caretaker and a painter. In addition to the reading room and the people's library, there was also a coffee room and the employment office, and later the employment office. Today the city library has the entire building at its disposal.
