The Lahe city cemetery is the youngest of the five large city cemeteries in Hanover . The cemetery in the Lahe district, created in 1968, is 37 hectares in size and houses around 25,000 graves.

history

After the Second World War , the existing cemeteries in Hanover were fully occupied; In addition, the city expected the population to grow from around 500,000 to 700,000 in the medium term. Furthermore, the burials should be concentrated in five large cemeteries: In addition to the Engesohde city cemetery , the Stöcken city cemetery should be responsible for the north-west of the city, the Ricklingen city cemetery for the south-west, the Seelhorst city cemetery for the south-east and Lahe for the north-east. The smaller district cemeteries should be closed for this.

Since the planned area between Kirchhorster Straße and the then planned A 37 moor motorway had a high groundwater level, it was raised by two meters. For this purpose, the excavated soil from the subway construction at the time was used. The earthworks began in January 1966. In 1968 the first three hectares were ready for occupancy. The expansion of the cemetery dragged on for years and reached today's size in 1981.

The Stadtfriedhof Lahe also manages the Bothfeld district cemetery, which was laid out in 1910 with 4,500 graves on 7.6 hectares, the Misburg forest cemetery with 4,500 graves on 7.9 hectares and the Isernhagen-Süd district cemetery with 550 graves on 1.1 hectares.
