The Stadtgarten Cognac is a public park ( jardin public ) in the center of the French city of Cognac in the Charente department . In terms of style, it is an English garden and emerged from two adjoining properties on which the town hall and the city's art museum are now located .

history

Hôtel Otard de la Grange (today's town hall)

In 1889, the city acquired the Hôtel Otard de la Grange , which the town hall moved into three years later. The building was redesigned by the architect Alfred Leroux , who added a bell tower and a monumental staircase . The landscape architect Édouard André converted the park into a sunken garden with several viewpoints and a water surface.

The museum was housed in the building of the Hôtel Dupuy d'Angeac , acquired in 1921 and designed by Antoine Raymond Clavery. This created a natural theater taking advantage of the natural hill formation and united the two parks while retaining the design by Édouard André, but with narrower avenues and no larger viewpoints.

In 1999, 288 of the 720 existing trees were felled by a storm . Landscape architect Jean-François Galinet took the opportunity to fall back on designs by Antoine Raymond Clavery and Édouard André for the redesign.

description

The park covers an area of about seven hectares and is located in the city center, visible from afar from the streets that run along the surrounding lattice fence. From the main entrance you have a wide view over the hilly park area to the monumental staircase of the town hall. On the right side there is a duck and swan pond, which is part of a labyrinth of artificial rivers and waterfalls.

One of the sides of the park is bordered by a rose garden with a pergola , an intermediate wall separates it from a row of houses. Like many large English-style gardens, this one has several follies :

  • Gothic tower, built in 1835, features a remarkable combination of materials and colors. It is located in the middle of a small pond and is a listed building.
  • Orangery in the style of Malmaison Castle
  • "Ancient" grottos and waterfalls, artificial tree trunks made of mortar are used for bridges and steps
  • Bandstand

The natural theater near the museum was built on an existing natural hill. When concerts are taking place, it is accessible from the museum's courtyard, where a war memorial once stood.
