Greifswald City Hall

The Greifswald city hall is one of the central concert and event venues and at the same time one of the sights of the university and Hanseatic city of Greifswald .

history

Portico

The town hall was built from 1913 to 1915 as part of a building complex together with the Greifswald Theater according to the plans of the Berlin architects Richard and Heinrich Iwan and Erich Trehde. The construction costs were around 650,000 marks . The town hall was opened on December 10, 1914, and the theater too a year later.

In the decades after its opening, the town hall, theater and theater café were among the city's central cultural attractions.

In 1945 the town hall served as an emergency shelter for refugees and in the 1950s was initially used as a house for young people and later as a district culture house. At times, the venue also operated under the name Volkshaus . It was closed in 1990. The building passed to the city in 1992. Parts of it were still used as rehearsal rooms for the theater in the 1990s.

On December 18, 2009, the Greifswald city hall was reopened after extensive renovation and restoration work. The 2009/10 New Year's Eve ball was sold out within three hours.

building

Stairs and entrance

The town hall and theater were built in the style of neoclassicism . The building is connected to the neighboring Greifswald location of the Theater Vorpommern and is therefore part of a larger building complex consisting of the theater and the town hall.

The town hall has two halls, the somewhat smaller "Rubenowsaal", named after Heinrich Rubenow , and the large "Kaisersaal". The Imperial Hall, which has been restored according to the historical model, has 450 seats in the parquet floor and a further 150 seats on the gallery.

use

In the past, the Greifswald city hall was used for all kinds of cultural events. For example, graduations, university celebrations and ceremonies, major political events, trade fairs, exhibitions, concerts and conferences took place here.
