Horst Wernicke

Horst Wernicke (born August 31, 1951 in Greifswald ) is a German historian and former holder of the Chair for Medieval and Hanseatic History at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald .

Life

From 1970 to 1974 he studied history and geography in Greifswald , was a research assistant and senior research assistant from 1974 to 1980 and 1983/84. The doctorate took place in 1979. The short interruption of the scientific work was punishment for an aborted study trip to the USSR. During this time he was the manager of the student dormitories on Makarenkostraße. In 1984 he completed his habilitation and in 1986 he was appointed university lecturer. Since 1992 he has held the chair for Medieval and Hanseatic History at the University of Greifswald, and since 1996 coordinator of the Standing Conference of Historians of the Baltic Sea Region .

In 1971 he became a member of the Working Group of Hanseatic Historians in the GDR. After the unification of Germany, the working group became part of the Hanseatic History Association in Lübeck again. Wernicke is a member of the board and publisher of the Greifswald Historical Studies, a series of publications that was once brought into being by the working group. From June 2013 to December 2017 he was chairman of the Historical Commission for Pomerania .

In 2013, Wernicke contributed his memoirs to the commemorative publication “150 Years of the Historical Institute” in Greifswald. He commented very critically on developments in university policy since the fall of the Wall.

On August 31, 2016, on his 65th birthday, he received a commemorative publication in which many colleagues, companions and students paid tribute to him. In March 2017, Wernicke retired. The chair for Hanseatic history was not filled again.
