from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The City History Museum Mainz is dedicated to the more than 2000 year old city history of Mainz . The museum was founded in 1999 and is supported by the association "Stadthistorisches Museum Mainz" eV, which is supported by the city of Mainz. In the premises of the museum on the Mainz Citadel and in the immediate vicinity of the Drususstein , the sponsoring association dedicates itself to the themes of historic Mainz in the form of special and permanent exhibitions as well as lectures, readings and guided tours.

Permanent exhibitions deal with the topics of economic and working life in the 19th and 20th centuries, the Jewish Mainz- Magenza , Mainz children's worlds and a general overview of the 2000-year history of the city of Mainz. In addition, the museum shows, for example, originally furnished work and living rooms from earlier times, shows exhibits and provides information about other media communication media. Special exhibitions complement the museum offer of the City History Museum every year. They are mostly dedicated to specific topics of the city's history such as shellac production in Mainz in the 19th and 20th centuries (here Mainz played a leading role in the production of shellac), Mainz Biedermeier furniture or the history of beer brewing in Mainz. As a rule, publications and exhibition catalogs are created for the special exhibitions and are available in bookshops.

In addition to the city of Mainz, the sponsoring association also cooperates with the “Association for Social History” in Mainz and, in the field of contemporary witness reports, with the state's “Education Server Rhineland-Palatinate” project.

The maintenance of the museum is covered voluntarily by the sponsoring association. The city of Mainz provides the premises and supports the special exhibitions with selective financial support. The association bears all other costs through its own fundraising.
