history

As a replacement for a medieval chapel , the first church was built in 1605 , which was in need of renovation in 1670. The church tower had to be demolished in 1783 because it was in disrepair. Since then, the bell tower has stood on the Hohenleuben market.

The new building of the city church

In 1786 the new church was built around the old one and then the old church was demolished. The Protestant town church is a single-nave classicist church building. After a long break, it was not completed until the tower was built in 1851.

The altar painting Calvary came to the church in 1998. The monumental painting by the Gotha court painter Paul Emil Jacobs was created in 1844 for the Augustinian Church there ; it had almost been forgotten since a church renovation in 1938/39 before it was rediscovered, restored and given to Hohenleuben.

The organ from 1852 comes from Christoph Opitz ; it has a total of 25 registers on 2 manuals and pedal.

Crypt

The crypt of the Reuss-Köstritz house is located under the church. It was built by Count Heinrich XXIV in 1741 for himself and his family. 23 family members were buried here by 1850.

Perspective work

In the next few years the exterior plastering of the city church is to be realized for 277,000 euros. Funding is remembered.
