City Church St. Georg (Arneburg)
The Stadtkirche St. Georg is the main church in the city of Arneburg (Saxony-Anhalt). The Romanesque building is said to be the oldest church in the Altmark. The first half of the 12th century is assumed to be the construction time. The foundation walls of a previous building were included in the new building. The stone walls of this church are up to 1.3 meters thick.
It belongs to the Stendal parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .
description
The four-part floor plan shows a west tower that is wider than the adjoining nave . A transept and a choir without an apse adjoin to the east. The longitudinal axis of the choir deviates from the axis of the nave. This is due to the use of parts from the previous building.
During the town fire in 1767, the interior of the church burned out completely. The reconstruction was completed in 1774. In 1868 the tower was raised by a brick bell house and the western portal, following the Gothic models, was broken into the tower. At the same time, the equipment was largely renewed.
Between 1979 and 1985 the interior of the church was redesigned again. The chairs in the crossing were removed and a simple altar table was set up here. Two walled up choir windows were opened again. The old altar has been removed. The now erected baroque altar and pulpit come from the chapel of the former Heiliggeist Hospital in Quedlinburg .
organ
The organ was built between 1818 and 1821 by the organ builder August Zabel. The slider chest instrument has 20 stops on two manuals and a pedal. The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
