History and description
The first Darmstadt city wall was built from rubble stones with square towers from 1330 . The construction of the kennel in front of it and the outer ring fortifications began at the beginning of the 15th century . The outer wall is approximately 2 feet (0.57 m) thick. The inner one is approximately 4 feet (1.14 m) thick. The width of the kennel averages approximately 15 feet (4.25 m).
Of the watchtowers, only the Hinkel tower still exists today . The Hinkelsturm was up to the year 1944 with a shallow pitched roof covered. The inner wall had a shingled roof. In the 17th century the tower walls had a steep hipped roof .
For the construction of the city wall and the watchtowers, mostly volcanic basalt rocks ( melaphyre ) were used.
